Pasta unplugged

A glossy catalogue from a well-known German mail-order company came my way recently, and it’s a fascinating read. Half of it is taken up with the sort of useless junk for which the phrase “more money than sense” was coined: a USB electric razor is just one of the items that appears to have originated in a parallel chindōgu dimension.

My favourite, though, was the unpowered pasta cooker. “Who still cooks pasta in pans?” asked the text, before extolling the virtues of this amazing gadget, which can be used to cook pasta without access to a cooker, mains electricity, or any form of power at all. Prepare pasta anywhere, and at any time, al dente and environment-friendly. Power cut? Lost in the wilderness? Stranded in deep space? No problem: all you do is put in some pasta and a pinch of salt, and then add boiling water.
