Today I learned…

Today I learned that there are two contrasting theories about the composition of “dark matter”, the mysterious stuff some scientists believe make up a significant part of our universe.

The first theory is that dark matter is made up of subatomic particles which are totally different from normal matter, and hardly interact with each other at all. These hypothetical subatomic particles are known as Weakly Interacting Massive Particles, or “WIMPs”.

The second theory is that dark matter is actually ordinary matter, but it just doesn’t give off any radiation. This type of dark matter manifests itself as Massive Astrophysical Compact Halo Objects, or “MACHOs”.

WIMPs and MACHOs. I’m not a scientist, but doesn’t this sound to you as if they came up with a couple of acronyms and had to design a theory to fit?
